The Vernon Stiles Inn
There's a white building in the center of Thompson Hill that captures my imagination when I drive by it. It's a long white building with blinds and white lights in every window.
So today I did my research. It is called the Vernon Stiles Inn and at one time The Russian Bear had a package with it to house people when they came here for the weekend. They would dine, drink and play bridge at the Bear, swim in Webster Lake and maybe take on a play downtown.
The Venon Stiles Tavern was built in 1814 by Stephen Teffi, Dr. James Webb, Hezekiah Olney and Noadiah Comins. It was a very popular destination in the center of town basting that "more stage passengers dined there every day than any other house in New England".
It also became known as a wedding facility for Captain Stiles, a Justice of the Peace would wed virtually anyone there who didn't like their state requirements. It's no wonder that the Quiet Corner of Connecticut has become a popular wedding destination!
In the mid 1830's the temperance movement arose and Captain Stiles changed the dwelling into a "Temperance House" (that means it was a bar without liquor). Later it became an Inn, Tavern and Restaurant, with names such as Vernon Stiles Inn and White Horse Inn.
It is now known as The Cottage House a bed and breakfast. It is attached to the Lord Thompson Manor a mansion wedding venue.
A few trivial facts about this fascinating building... Lafayette stayed there for 3 days on a trip through the area and it was in a 1959 mystery movie called "The Man in the Net". Weddings are no longer hosted there but rooms are available.
This place is adorable and I think it would make a wonderful place for additional lodging for some of our upcoming workshops (upcoming in the far future)... in the true spirit of The Russian Bear. It looks like it even comes equipped with a small spa for a massage.
